At Maketu School, learning begins with where we are, who we are and the people we learn alongside. Our local curriculum connects the New Zealand Curriculum and Te Mātaiaho to the rich history, culture, environment and aspirations of our community, making learning authentic, meaningful and relevant for every tamaiti.
From our school gardens to local wetlands and ngahere, learners investigate biodiversity, food production and environmental responsibility while developing a lifelong commitment to caring for our natural world.
Through local history, pūrākau, whakapapa and significant places, tamariki develop a deep understanding of the people, events and traditions that have shaped Maketu and continue to influence our community today.
Learning extends beyond the classroom through partnerships with whānau, iwi, local organisations and community experts who share their knowledge, skills and experiences with our learners.
Our coastline, estuary and harbour are living classrooms where tamariki explore marine science, sustainability, conservation and kaitiakitanga through real-world experiences.
Instead of simply learning about the world, our tamariki learn through experiences that are connected to their own lives. Whether investigating our local waterways, creating in our gardens, participating in kapa haka, exploring local history or contributing to community projects, learning is purposeful, engaging and grounded in the place we call home.
